# Two kinds of popularity numbers, and how RankASO labels them

Sam · Published November 4, 2026 · Canonical: https://rankaso.app/blog/apple-ads-popularity-in-aso-tool/

A keyword's popularity in RankASO comes from one of two places, and the badge on the number always says which. A dashed gray pill marked EST is the app's own estimate, built from public signals for the term. A solid black pill marked APPLE is Apple's search popularity for the term, read from your own Apple Ads account after you connect it. The two are never averaged or shown in the same style, because they are different kinds of number and a score that cannot say where it came from is not one you can act on.

## Before you connect

Every term shows an estimate. It is a ranking of your own terms against each other more than a measure of absolute volume: the terms it puts at the top deserve attention first. The verdicts, Go for it, Climbable, Long shot and Skip, run on the estimate's scale, and the facts sheet behind each score says so.

## After you connect

Pro users with an Apple Ads account can connect it from More. The setup takes a few minutes and the connection is between your phone and your own account; nothing passes through us. From then on, each term you track is looked up and the pill turns solid with Apple's figure. The verdict rules switch to Apple's scale, which runs lower for niche terms, and the facts sheet names the scale it used, so the same term can honestly read differently before and after.

## What changes in practice

- **Long-tail terms read lower.** Many phrases that an estimate rates comfortably sit at the floor of Apple's scale. That is not bad news; it tells you where volume really is, and which of your number ones are small.
- **The visibility score is reweighted.** The share of tracked demand you hold is computed with Apple's numbers where they exist, and says so.
- **Discover sorts by the real figure.** New terms from the store's completions are looked up before you decide to track them.
- **Stale figures fall back.** If a term's Apple figure cannot be refreshed for two weeks, the pill returns to the dashed estimate rather than showing an old number as current.

## Why the two are kept apart

An estimate dressed as a measurement would make the app look more certain than it is, and the first time a user compared it with the real figure they would stop trusting every number in the app. Keeping the badges distinct costs nothing and means every screen is honest at a glance. Only one component in the app is allowed to draw a popularity pill, so no screen can get it wrong.

## Who should connect

Anyone running Apple Ads already has the account; connecting it takes the guesswork out of which organic terms are worth the characters. Anyone not running ads can open an Apple Ads account for the purpose; the figures are available without a campaign. Everyone else gets the estimate, labelled as one, and every other feature of the app works the same.

## Questions

### Where does RankASO's popularity number come from?

Either its own estimate from public signals for the term, shown as a dashed EST pill, or Apple's search popularity from your own connected Apple Ads account, shown as a solid APPLE pill. Never a blend.

### Do I need Apple Ads to use RankASO?

No. Everything works with the estimate. Connecting Apple Ads is optional and Pro, and it swaps the estimate for Apple's figure on the terms you track.

### Why do my terms read lower after connecting Apple Ads?

Because Apple's scale puts most niche and long-tail terms near its floor. The verdict rules switch scale with the number, and the facts sheet says which scale it used.
