# How to check your App Store keyword ranking, free

To check your App Store keyword ranking, search the keyword in the App Store for the storefront you care about and count down to your app. That is your rank for today. The trap is that the App Store app personalises what it shows you, so your own phone can show a flattering result. A rank tracker reads the neutral result for each storefront, which is what a new user sees, and does it every day at the same hour so that movement means something. Here are both ways, and the habits that separate a number from a trend.

## 1. Search in the App Store app

Open the App Store, search the exact term, scroll, count. Ads at the top do not count. Do it per storefront by switching your Apple ID's country, or ask a friend in that country.

What to watch for: the store personalises results by what you have installed, downloaded and searched. Your own app is likely to rank a place or two higher on your own phone than for a stranger. For a quick sanity check it is fine. For a number you will compare week to week, it is not.

## 2. A tracker, once a day, same time

The number you want is not today's rank. It is today's rank next to yesterday's, for every term, every storefront, at the same hour, so that a move of three places is a move and not noise from checking at lunch instead of breakfast. That is a tracker.

RankASO does this on your iPhone. Each morning it reads the public result for each keyword and storefront you track, to position 200, records your rank and every rival's rank from the same result, and shows what moved on the Today screen and in a widget. The free plan covers one app, 30 keywords and two storefronts, with no account.

## Three habits that make the numbers mean something

1. **Check at a consistent time.** The store's index updates on its own schedule; a check that drifts across the day drifts across index updates.
2. **Record misses as misses.** A day with no check is a gap on the chart, not a copy of the last value. A tool that fills gaps is lying to you politely. RankASO draws a missed day as a dashed marker.
3. **Read rivals from the same result.** If you are at 4 and the rival is at 2, that is true only if both numbers come from the same search. Two searches minutes apart can disagree.

## Reading the result

A rank in the top 10 is on the first screen of results and gets most of the taps; 11 to 30 gets a few; past 50 is invisible to searchers and useful only as a trend line. For a new term, the first week is noisy while the index settles after a metadata change. For an old term, a drop of more than ten places in a day is almost always one of three things: you changed your listing, a rival changed theirs, or the term has a seasonal spike. Check those three before anything else. With a rival tracked, the second one takes a glance.

## Questions

### Why is my rank different in the App Store app and in a tracker?

Personalisation. The App Store app tailors results to your device; a tracker reads the public result for the storefront. The public result is the one a new user is most likely to see.

### How often should I check keyword ranks?

Once a day is enough and more is noise. The index does not move hour to hour in a way worth tracking.

### Can I check ranks for a country I am not in?

Yes. A tracker reads any storefront from anywhere. RankASO tracks two storefronts on the free plan and 175 on Pro.
