Best ASO tools for indie developers in 2026

The best ASO tool for an indie developer is the one you open every morning. Not the one with the biggest keyword database, not the one with the most charts, the one that tells you in ten seconds what moved overnight, where your rivals stand on your terms, and which words in your listing are earning nothing. We shipped apps for years with a browser dashboard we logged into twice a month, and our ranks drifted for weeks before we noticed. So we built RankASO, an ASO app that lives on the iPhone, needs no account, and makes the daily check as easy as checking the weather.

What an ASO tool has to do for a small studio
A one-person or two-person studio has no ASO manager. The tool is the ASO manager. These are the seven jobs it has to do without being asked.
- Check every keyword, every day, per storefront. Ranks move overnight and they move differently in the US, Canada, the UK and Japan. A weekly look misses the drop that cost you a week of installs.
- Read your rivals from the same search. A rival's rank is only comparable to yours if both come from the same result at the same moment. Tracking them separately, hours apart, produces numbers that argue with each other.
- Judge each keyword word by word. Your name, subtitle and keyword field are a hundred and sixty characters of strategy. The tool should say, for each word, whether it earns a rank anywhere or just takes up space.
- Explain every score. A popularity or difficulty number you cannot question is a number you cannot act on. Every score should open to the facts behind it.
- Stay quiet until something happens. An alert when you enter the top 10, leave it, jump, or when a rival disappears. Nothing on the days nothing moved.
- Keep your keyword list yours. The keywords you track are your strategy. They should not live on someone else's server.
- Cost nothing until you outgrow it. One app and a few dozen keywords should be free. Paying should start at a real limit, not at a timer.
Most dashboards do the first job and charge for the rest. Few do the second and third at all.
The app we built to do all seven
RankASO runs on your iPhone. Each morning it checks every keyword you track against the public App Store search for each storefront, to position 200, and shows what moved on a Today screen and a home-screen widget. Add a rival and its rank is read from the same search as yours, with a Gaps list of the terms it ranks for and you do not, and a Strengths view of the words in its listing that do the work. Studio reads your own name, subtitle and keyword field and reports, word by word, what each earns; the rule checker flags wasted characters as you type; the optimizer writes a field from the terms you already win. Every score has a Why? sheet listing the facts that produced it.
There is no sign-up. The App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected, because nothing leaves the phone except the same requests the App Store app makes. The free plan tracks one app, 30 keywords and two storefronts, with Studio and the rule checker included, and the paywall appears only when you reach a limit.

When you still want a desktop dashboard
There is one job RankASO does not try to do: search the whole store's vocabulary for a category you know nothing about. Discover finds the terms the App Store already associates with the seeds you give it, which is enough for a niche you are already in. Entering a new category, a one-off month in a large keyword database, exported and cancelled, is a reasonable way to build the first list. Then track that list where you will actually look at it every day.
What to check before you pick any tool
- Does it show your rank per storefront, or one blended number?
- Are rival ranks read from the same search as yours?
- Can it tell you which words in your keyword field earn nothing?
- Does every score explain itself?
- Where does your keyword list live, and who else can see it?
- When does it start charging, and for what?
If the answers are "per storefront", "yes", "yes", "yes", "on my phone" and "at a real limit", you have found it.

Questions
Do I need a paid ASO tool as an indie developer?
Not at the start. A free plan that checks your ranks daily and reads your keyword field is enough for one app. Pay when you add a second app, a rival or more storefronts, which is where the work scales.
Is an iPhone app better than a web dashboard for ASO?
For the daily check, yes: the phone is where you are when the ranks refresh, and a widget makes the check a glance. A web dashboard is better for a one-off afternoon of research in a large keyword database.
How do I know which keywords are worth tracking?
Start with the words in your name and subtitle, add the phrases the App Store suggests when you type them, and let the verdicts sort them: Go for it, Climbable, Long shot, Skip. RankASO's Discover does this from the seeds you give it.
