Missed days and missing data: why a rank is never faked

A day without a rank check is a gap in the record, and the honest thing to do with a gap is to draw it as one. A tracker that copies yesterday's number into today's makes a flat line out of a day it knows nothing about, and the flat line hides exactly the step you were tracking for. RankASO stores a missed day as missing and draws it as a dashed marker, and every chart, average and before-and-after in the app treats it as absent rather than as a repeat. Here is why that rule matters more than it sounds, and what the app does instead of guessing.

What a filled gap hides

Suppose a version re-indexes on Tuesday and your rank steps from 18 to 9. If Tuesday's check did not run and the tracker copied Monday's 18, Wednesday shows a jump from 18 to 9 on the wrong day, and the version's timeline is wrong by a day. Suppose instead the check missed three days during a drop: a filled series shows a plateau and then a cliff, when the truth was a slide. Every decision in ASO is a comparison between two dates, and a filled gap puts the wrong number on one of them.

What a missed day looks like

On the keyword's chart, a dashed marker where the point would be. On the list, yesterday's movement reads against the last real check, labelled with its date, not against a phantom. In the before-and-after view, a window with missed days says how many were missed, and the comparison uses the real points. On the Today screen, a day the check could not run says so, and says when it will try again.

Why checks are missed

The phone was off or without a connection at the check hour. The store did not answer, or asked the app to slow down, which happens to everyone who reads it daily and is handled by waiting and retrying later in the day. The app was not opened for weeks on a phone that limits background work. In each case the app tries again when it can and reports what landed; it never backfills what it did not see.

Three rules the app keeps

  1. A rank is a reading on a date. No reading, no rank. Averages and visibility scores are computed over the days that exist.
  2. A rival's rank comes from the same search as yours. If your search did not run, neither did theirs; there is no half-day where one is real and the other is invented.
  3. A filtered term is not a rank of zero. Some terms return nothing from search at all; the app shows them as filtered, separate from unranked and separate from missed.

What to do with a gap

Usually nothing. Open the app and pull to refresh if you want a reading now; the daily series resumes from the next scheduled check. If a gap covers a day that mattered, a release day for instance, the before-and-after view will use the nearest real points on each side and say so. The one thing not to do is reconstruct the missing number from memory.

Questions

What happens if my rank tracker misses a day?

The honest tracker shows a gap. RankASO stores the day as missing, draws a dashed marker, and computes movement and averages over the real points only.

Why would a daily rank check fail?

The phone was off or offline at the check hour, the store did not answer or asked for a pause, or the app had not been opened in a long time on a phone that limits background work. The check is retried later the same day.

Should a tracker estimate a rank for a missing day?

No. An estimate on a chart of real readings is a fake reading. It hides steps, shifts timelines and corrupts every comparison that touches the day.
