App Store ranking dropped? A three-check diagnosis

A keyword rank that drops has one of three causes, and you can tell which in about a minute: you changed your listing, a rival changed theirs, or the term itself changed. Each has a different fix, and guessing wrong costs a version. The checks are in order of how often they are the answer. RankASO puts the evidence for all three on the term's own screen, which is why the diagnosis is a minute and not an afternoon.

A keyword's detail in RankASO with the top 10 apps on that term

Check 1: did you change the listing?

Open the journal. If a version that touched the name, subtitle or keyword field went live in the last two weeks, that is the cause until proven otherwise. The field report shows which word carried the dropped term, and whether you removed it. For our own app Escape, the word "lust" had carried a rank on that term; when the term fell out of the top 200 in the US it was because a much larger app owned the word outright, and the November field change took it out on purpose. A drop you chose is not a problem; it is a trade, and the before-and-after shows whether it paid.

If you did change the listing, wait for the two-week settle before acting. If you did not, go to check 2.

Check 2: did a rival change theirs?

Open the term. The top 10 shows who is above you today, with their rating counts. A new name in the top 10, or a known rival that jumped several places, means they shipped a listing change. Their Strengths view in Rivals shows which words in their new name or subtitle carry the term. If a rival with far more ratings now has the term's words in their name, the term has become a harder fight; the verdict will have moved from Climbable to Long shot and the honest move is to spend your characters elsewhere. If the rival is comparable to you, their word belongs in your subtitle next version.

RankASO alerts you the day a tracked rival makes a big move or vanishes, so this check usually happens the morning it matters, not at the next review.

Check 3: did the term itself move?

Some terms are seasonal, and a rank can drop because the term got busy, not because you got worse: a wave of new apps and ads lands on it and the top 10 reshuffles. "no nut november" is a term on Escape's list that behaves this way every autumn. Others fade; a term that lost its searches also loses the signals that kept you ranked. The term's popularity trend and the churn in its top 10 tell you which. A seasonal term is left alone and read again next month. A fading term is replaced.

What a drop is not

A move of one or two places day to day is noise, not a drop. A different rank on your own phone in the App Store app is personalisation, not a drop. A gap in the chart because a day's check did not run is not a drop either; RankASO draws it as a dashed marker so it cannot be mistaken for one. Act on a drop of ten places or more that holds for three days.

Questions

Why did my App Store keyword ranking suddenly drop?

Three possible causes: a listing change on your side in the last two weeks, a rival's listing change that put them above you, or a seasonal or fading term. The top 10 on the term and your journal tell you which.

How much of a drop is worth acting on?

Ten places or more, held for three days, in the storefront that matters. Day-to-day moves of one or two places are noise.

Can a rank drop because of a missed check?

No. A missed day is a gap, not a drop. RankASO stores it as missing and draws a dashed marker rather than filling it with the last value.
